OK Department Wants Lower Age for Firefighters

The Tulsa Fire Department hopes city officials will lower the age requirement for firefighters from 21 to 18.

An Oklahoma fire department is asking city officials to lower the age requirement for firefighters.

Currently, firefighters must be 21 years old to join the Tulsa Fire Department, but a proposed city measure would reduce the age to 18, KJRH-TV reports. The department is pushing for the change to make it more competitive when it comes to attracting local candidates.

"Before this discussion happened, you know you're talking to a student, 'Hey, come join the Tulsa Fire Department.' Then they graduate, then it's multiple years before they're even able to be considered," Tulsa Fire Department spokesman Andy Little told KJRH.
